Development Case of TPE Material Application in Lipstick Bottle Spouts—Research on the ES45 Series

I. Product Overview

The ES45 series is a high-rebound, transparent thermoplastic elastomer material with low odor. It features rapid molding characteristics and moderate flowability, while also demonstrating excellent weather resistance and moldability. This material is particularly well-suited for applications requiring overmolding, such as bonding with PE materials, and can be molded at temperatures up to 200°C. In addition, the ES45 series boasts a matte finish, a dry feel, and superior chemical resistance, giving it broad application potential across multiple industries.

II. Application Background and Requirements

In the production of lipstick tube nozzles, customers have extremely stringent requirements for materials. First, since the lipstick tube nozzle comes into direct contact with consumers’ lips, the material must be low-odor to ensure product safety and comfort. Second, the nozzle needs to be overmolded onto a PE bottle body to guarantee the product’s integrity and sealing performance. Finally, in accordance with the requirements of the national standard GB-T 16886.5-2017 for in vitro cytotoxicity testing, the material must exhibit excellent biocompatibility.

III. Materials Development Process

To meet customer demand for lip balm tube nozzle materials, we undertook the following material development process:

  1. Preliminary attempt We first tried the ES40A-NB material. Although it boasts high transparency, it tends to yellow easily at high temperatures, failing to meet the customer’s color requirements.
  2. Further screening Next, we tried the ES40A-GT-5 material. Although it boasts high transparency, it fails to adhere tightly to the mold at low temperatures and tends to stick to the mold at high temperatures; thus, it was also ruled out.
  3. Approaching the target Then we tried the ES40E-02 material. Although it exhibited good molding and encapsulation performance, its hardness was too soft and did not meet the hardness requirements for lipstick tube nozzles.
  4. Successfully developed Finally, after numerous attempts and adjustments, we successfully developed the ES45 series material. This material not only meets the customer’s requirements for transparency, low odor, and overmolding compatibility, but also achieves the hardness standard required for lip balm applicator tips.

IV. Case Description and Application Effects

In this case, the ES45 series material has been successfully applied in the production of lipstick tube nozzles. By combining it with a PE-coated finish, a tight bond between the nozzle and the tube body has been achieved. Meanwhile, the low-odor characteristics of the ES45 series material ensure the safety and comfort of the lipstick nozzle during use. Furthermore, in accordance with the requirements of the national standard GB-T 16886.5-2017 for in vitro cytotoxicity testing, the ES45 series material has also demonstrated excellent biocompatibility.

V. Summary and Outlook

Through this TPE material development case, we have successfully provided a high-performance material solution for the production of lipstick tube nozzles. The ES45 series materials, with their outstanding features such as high resilience, transparency, low odor, and excellent encapsulation performance, hold great potential for applications in the cosmetics packaging industry. Moving forward, we will continue to dedicate ourselves to the R&D and innovation of TPE materials, offering our customers even more high-quality material solutions.
