In the domestic TPE elastomer modification industry, different TPE manufacturers have varying levels of technical maturity when it comes to bonding TPE to PA nylon. From a material property perspective, bonding TPE to PA nylon is inherently challenging because of the significant difference in molecular polarity between the two materials, leading to poor inherent compatibility. This issue can be addressed by introducing grafting materials to improve the adhesion between TPE and nylon, which is a consideration from a formulation standpoint. Additionally, during processing, it is essential to achieve similar processing temperatures for both TPE and nylon. For example, if the injection molding temperature for PA nylon is between 250-260 degrees Celsius, then the secondary injection molding temperature for TPE should be close to this range, approximately 240-250 degrees Celsius, slightly below the nylon injection temperature but as close as possible.
Methods to Improve Adhesion Between TPE and PA Nylon
1. Improving the compatibility of TPE and PA through formulation adjustments to enhance their adhesion.
2. Increasing the injection molding temperature of TPE appropriately. Since TPE materials used for bonding to PA nylon have a higher plasticization temperature, sufficient processing temperature must be maintained to meet the temperature conditions necessary for good adhesion with PA nylon.
3. Preheating PA nylon parts before secondary injection molding. In actual TPE overmolding processes, PA nylon parts can be preheated in an oven and then immediately placed into the overmolding mold, followed by the immediate injection of TPE material, which can improve adhesion.
4. Modifying product design. Holes can be drilled in non-critical areas of the PA nylon part, and serrated grooves can be set at the edges of the soft overmold position. By using insert molding or increasing the contact surface area between TPE and PA, the adhesion between the two can be improved.
