Enhancing TPE Overmolding on Nylon: Strategies to Overcome Adhesion Challenges
Time of issue:2024-08-23
Addressing the Issue of Insufficient Adhesion in TPE Overmolding on Nylon:
The application of TPE overmolding on nylon (PA) has gained significant momentum in recent years, particularly in industries such as cookware, electrical tools, automotive components, and fitness equipment. However, during the actual molding process, the challenge of inadequate adhesion between TPE and nylon often arises. To tackle this issue, our formula and process expertise at Supo TPE has matured, ensuring optimal adhesion between TPE and nylon. Based on our extensive experience, here are five key aspects to improve TPE overmolding on nylon:
1. Machinery & Melting Points:
When overmolding TPE on nylon, it's crucial to consider the varying melting points of different nylon grades. Besides polar modification, the formulation should ensure that TPE and nylon have similar melting points, facilitating better physical properties and adhesion.
2. Pre-Baking of Nylon Parts:
For secondary injection molding, pre-baking the nylon parts at 130-140°C for 2 hours removes moisture, enhancing adhesion.
3. Mold Design:
Before designing the overmolding mold, evaluate the structure of the coating layer to ensure efficient TPE flow and adhesion to the nylon surface. Adding extra gate locations can facilitate better coverage if necessary.
4. Process Optimization:
While the formula lays the foundation, process adjustments are vital. The TPE molding temperature should be adjusted to slightly melt the nylon surface, typically 5-10°C lower than the nylon's molding temperature. Optimize other process parameters to eliminate defects like watermarks, flash, and shrinkage. For cost-effective solutions, consider designing grooves or holes on the nylon parts to enhance mechanical interlocking between TPE and nylon.
5. Comprehensive Consideration:
By addressing these five details—mechanical and thermal compatibility, pre-baking, mold design, process optimization, and mechanical interlocking—we can achieve flawless TPE overmolding on nylon, ensuring robust adhesion and superior product quality.
