TPE Materials in Baby Products: Applications and Safety Considerations

The use of TPE materials in baby products is quite common nowadays. However, when it comes to baby products, the most important aspect is safety, as babies have weaker constitutions compared to adults, and only products with qualified quality can be safe and reliable.
Generally, baby products can be divided into two categories:
- Products that come into contact with the skin, mouth, or have short-term contact with non-oily food at room temperature;
- Products that are in long-term contact with or used to store high-temperature oily food.
The first category includes baby spoons and baby bathtubs. Since these products do not come into direct contact with food or have strict requirements for food contact, they generally only need to be made of materials that meet relevant tests such as ROHS, REACH, or toy EN71 standards. Moreover, TPE materials have mild chemical properties and do not cause allergic reactions when in long-term contact with human skin, which has been recognized by everyone.
The second category includes baby pacifiers and baby bowls. For such baby products, since the materials need to be in direct or long-term contact with food (especially oily and heated food, which requires more attention), the residual small-molecule chemicals in TPE materials may dissolve into the food and then be ingested by the baby. Although TPE and TPR do not contain (or their content meets relevant testing standards) toxic plasticizers (phthalates), nonylphenol, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, bisphenol A, etc., there is currently no clear evidence that the residual small molecules in TPE materials that may dissolve into food are seriously harmful to babies. However, considering the safety of babies as a special group, it is not recommended to use TPE or TPR materials for baby products that come into contact with this type of food; instead, silicone is recommended as a substitute.
