Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPEs): Versatility, Safety, and Performance Advantages Across Food, Medical, and Industrial Sealing Applications


Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) offer a soft tactile experience, making them highly appealing and beneficial for diverse consumer products. They are particularly well-suited for seals or bottle cap liners.

1. Food-Grade Applications
In any region, plastic materials or additives used in food-related products must comply with food contact certifications, ensuring consumer safety. Many baby utensils or toddler cups utilize food-contact-approved TPEs. Additionally, TPE coatings on fabrics are ideal for pet accessories like collars and leashes.

2. Medical and Healthcare Applications
For medical use, TPEs must meet stringent regulatory standards. They can be sterilized via autoclaving or gamma radiation and may offer biocompatibility, high purity, and minimal extractable/leachable substances. TPEs serve as alternatives to silicone, PVC, rubber, and other materials, though PVC remains widely used in applications like coated fabrics due to its unique advantages.

3. Seals and Gaskets
Traditionally, thermoset rubber dominated seal manufacturing. However, TPE seals enable color customization and two-component co-molding. TPE processing is more energy-efficient and faster than thermoset rubber alternatives.

TPE gaskets, commonly used in bottle caps and closures, provide superior oxygen barrier protection compared to PVC counterparts, acting as a seal between metal crowns, plastic lids, and external environments.
