TPE (TPR) Materials in Baby Furniture: Safety Concerns and Considerations


 

The increasing use of thermoplastic elastomers (TPE, also known as TPR) in baby furniture and products has raised concerns among parents about the safety of these materials, especially given the vulnerability of infants. Here’s an overview of TPE materials and their implications for infant safety:

#### Understanding TPE Materials

TPE, commonly referred to as SEBS or SBS, is a versatile material that combines the properties of rubber and plastic. It is widely used in various applications, including baby products, due to its flexibility, durability, and ease of processing. TPE materials meet several important safety standards, such as ROHS (latest revision), REACH (SVHC, latest 166 items), EN71 (toy industry standard), and limits on phthalates, nonylphenol, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and bisphenol A content.

However, when it comes to food contact materials, TPE must meet more stringent standards. For example, in the United States, the FDA testing standard is 21 CFR 177.2600, which includes a n-hexane residue test. In Germany, the LFGB standard requires an olive oil extraction residue test. Most SEBS-based TPE materials currently fail these tests because residual small molecules in the TPE can dissolve into n-hexane or olive oil, causing the test values to exceed the limits.

#### Safety Considerations for TPE in Baby Products

1. **Skin, Oral Contact, and Short-Term Non-Oily Food Contact:**
   - **Examples:** Baby spoons, bibs, soft toys, foldable bathtubs.
   - **Safety Standards:** These products generally only need to comply with ROHS, REACH, or EN71 toy safety standards.
   - **Material Properties:** TPE is chemically mild and does not cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in infants.
   - **Conclusion:** TPE is safe for use in these types of baby products.

2. **High-Temperature Oily Food Contact and Long-Term Storage:**
   - **Examples:** Bowls, containers for hot soups, baby bottle nipples.
   - **Safety Standards:** These products require direct and prolonged contact with food, especially heated oily foods. There is a risk that residual small molecules in TPE could leach into the food and be ingested by infants.
   - **Material Properties:** Although TPE does not contain toxic substances like phthalates, nonylphenol, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or bisphenol A (or their levels are within acceptable limits), there is still a concern about potential leaching of other small molecules.
   - **Conclusion:** For these types of products, it is recommended to use alternative materials like silicone, which have better food contact safety properties and are less likely to leach harmful substances.
