Choosing Between SBS-Based and SEBS-Based TPE Materials: A Guide from Sobo Plastics
Time of issue:2025-06-09
Commonly used TPE materials on the market are typically synthesized using SEBS and SBS as the main base materials. So, which is better for TPE materials—SBS-based or SEBS-based? This article from Sobo Plastics provides insights:
Option 1: For General Products, SEBS-Based TPE is Preferable
SEBS-based TPE offers superior aging resistance, crack resistance, and high-temperature tolerance (TPE can withstand temperatures of 70~90°C, whereas TPR can only handle 60~75°C), along with an excellent surface feel. Therefore, in most cases, SEBS-based TPE materials are the preferred choice. Examples include traditional injection-molded products, extruded products, and rubber products.
Option 2: For Ultra-Soft Products, SEBS-Based TPE is Typically Used
Due to SEBS being more "oily" than SBS, it allows for the creation of softer materials. Generally, materials with a hardness below 10A can only be made from SEBS-based TPE. SBS-based TPE materials tend to be brittle.
Option 3: For Toy Products, Including Pet Toys, SBS-Based TPE is Recommended
The use of SBS-based TPE takes into account the ease of painting and the more vivid appearance of the product. Although SBS-based TPE is more prone to cracking, it still possesses a certain degree of crack resistance for products with a hardness of 40A or higher and a thickness of 5-10mm. The higher the hardness and the greater the thickness, the better the material's crack resistance.
Option 4: For Shoe Soles, SBS-Based TPE is Predominantly Used
SBS-based TPE provides better rubber slip resistance and is easier to bond with other components.
Option 5: Blending SBS-Based and SEBS-Based TPE
Sometimes, to reduce costs, enhance surface effects, and improve molding convenience, a blend of SBS-based and SEBS-based TPE is used. However, if customers have high requirements for aging resistance and material performance, blending is not recommended.
